Audio Description Training Program

In 2025, SCAC created a cohort of audio describers to meet the increasing demand for these professionals in the arts. Audio describers help blind and low-vision patrons fully experience live performances and museum exhibits by describing the action on stage and items in exhibits. Now that we have cultivated a new generation of skilled describers, we would like to make it possible for arts organizations to integrate audio description options into accessibility programming. In so doing, arts organizations will be able to expand their audience outreach by welcoming the blind and low-vision community into their venues.

We plan to create new audio description services through a cost-sharing program. Trained practitioners will provide the audio description, incorporating the expertise of blind and low-vision (BLV) consultants in this process. This partnership between SCAC and arts organizations will subsidize the financial burden on the organization and allow for true inclusion of the BLV community since their voices and lived experiences will be incorporated into the work. The ultimate goal of this program is for arts organizations to eventually integrate audio description into their programming and budgets.

Goals of the Pilot Program:

  • Establish relationships with arts organizations interested in using audio describers

  • Partner with arts organizations in a cost sharing plan to place audio describers in programs and events.

  • Collaborate with BLV practitioners to gain insights and help improve description practices 

  • Create opportunities for BLV patrons to enjoy the arts more fully

How this works:

SCAC will work with organizations to figure out what program (s) or event (s) will be described,  provide information on the equipment needed and best practices for quality AD experiences, and clarify the specifics of the cost sharing partnership.
